General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679
General overview
The GDPR needs no introduction to any reader but a tech updater would not be complete without including easy access to it as a primary resource, which we have done here, with links to the complimentary Irish national legislation the Data Protection Act 2018.
The GDPR is a foundational piece of legislation with several aims. At its core, the Regulation focuses on the protection of the rights and interests of data subjects and encourages privacy by design and default at the outset of new tech development and throughout the technology lifecycle.
The GDPR has now been in force for almost five years. While the text of the GDPR has not changed since its implementation, there have been important developments in the interpretation and understanding of the concepts embedded in the GDPR by various bodies across the EU, including national supervisory authorities, the EDPB, national courts and the CJEU.
